Point and Sandwick Trust works to support and facilitate a wide range of projects and groups in the local area and across the wider Western Isles. The list below highlights just some of the work we've been involved in to support our community.
Leanne Fund Run 2025

Hydrogen Lab upgrades at UHI North, West and Hebrides
Earlier this year, we made a £40,000 grant which enabled the college to fully refurbish its existing hydrogen lab, bringing it up to current industrial standards and equipping it with advanced safety systems including a 3kW electrolyser, and a 3kW fuel cell. Read more.
Feis an Rubha 2024
Every year the volunteers of the Feis Committee put on a fantastic week for children in our area to celebrate and learn the Gaelic Arts. From lessons in keyboard, melodeon, guitar and violin to singing, drama and art, the week is a brilliant opportunity for young people to come together and have fun. Read more.
Sgoil an Rubha
Our local school is a fantastic place full of bright, curious children learning all about the world and we are pleased to have supported them to the tune of £38,550 since 2017 via our community grants programme. The grant awards have been used for school trips, school kit and a wide range of support for the children at Sgoil an Rubha and we are always pleased to hear about their adventures. New bus shelters for Garrabost
Fantastic work on display from young people in our community with an initiative to clean up the old bus shelters in Garrabost. We were very pleased to contribute £4,000 towards materials for these brilliant youngsters in their mission. Read more.

Christmas cheer!
We were pleased to announce grants in the run up to Christmas including £5,000 towards new Christmas lights between Branahuie and Parkend, £1,000 to Stornoway Primary Parent Council towards new Christmas lights to decorate the school and £10,000 each for local friendship groups Cairdean Og Allt nan Gall and Young at Heart Tiumpan who both held Christmas parties for their members to celebrate the season. We are supporting the Garrabost Mill Trust, a volunteer committee which now owns and is managing the significant plans for its restoration and reinvention as a historical visitor attraction. Read more
Leanne Fund Run - 2023
Point and Sandwick Trust have sponsored the Leanne Fund 5 and 10k Run for the last few years helping cover logistics costs for putting on this fantastic community event. The event was in its 14th year for 2023 and over 150 people took part raising awareness and funding to support families affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Read more

Trees for Primary Schools
The Trees for Primary Schools project was conceived by the Rotary Club of Stornoway and is being delivered in partnership with Point and Sandwick Trust and the Croft Woodlands Project. The project offers the opportunity for all Primary One children, in their first year of school, the opportunity to plant a tree in or near their school grounds and in the 21/22 planting season some 120 new trees have been planted. Covid Grocery Delivery Service
“As a family, we have been extremely grateful for the service you provided. It took much of the stress and anxiety away from us as we were able to access regular shopping supplies locally and in town.”
As part of our response to the Covid-19 pandemic, PST worked in close partnership with both Sandwick and Point Community Councils to deliver services for the benefit of our community. Our free grocery delivery service ran from May-September 2020.
LED Energy Community project - £360,000 over 5 years
This funding covers a partnership initiative with Tighean Innse Gall to reduce fuel poverty in the Western Isles. In 2014 a report showed 71% of residents in the Western Isles were living in fuel poverty. Along with high fuel bills and low energy efficiency, the high population of older people, and many low-income families were combined to create difficulties for residents in this remote location so highly dependent on warmth and power.
The project offered households in the Point and Sandwick area free installation of energy saving LED lightbulbs over a firve year perios, saving each household around £100 a year in energy bills, and providing advice on other measures to cut household bills and their domestic carbon footprint. Since 2017 the project visited 226 homes, installed over 2,780 power saving bulbs and delivered Energy Efficiency Measures installations such as draft proofing and insulation to 65 homes.
Western Isles Croft Woodland Project - £345,000 over 5 years
Launched in 2016, in a unique partnership with both the Woodland Trust and the Forestry Commission, the Point and Sandwick Trust funding supports the creation of native woodland on vacant croft land across the Western Isles. The benefits of native tree planting on crofts include landscape enhancement and amenity, shelter for livestock and buildings, woodfuel for the fire, wildlife habitat and bio-diversity. By June 2020 there will be over 100,000 trees planted through the project. This is a first step in restoring the missing habitat of woodland and scrub, with its associated wildlife and benefits for people.
Point and Sandwick Coastal Community Path
£57,000 in funding from the Joint Projects Fund managed by Point and Sandwick Trust and Stornoway Trust, and an additional £10,000 from Point and Sandwick Trust
The Point and Sandwick Coastal Community Path (PSCCP) vision is for a significant, 40km coastal walk which will begin in Stornoway, passing through Sandwick onto the Braighe and Aignish to follow a circular route around the Point peninsula. The project, run by a volunteer committee is a registered charity formed in 2016 for the purpose of developing a route to showcase the historic, cultural and natural attractions in the area in addition to its stunning views.
PSCCP published a feasibility report Ceum air Cheum to produce concept plans and with funding from Point and Sandwick Trust, LEADER and Stornoway Trust, phase one of the wider development was completed in December 2018.
