Visit Point and Sandwick

Discover the east coast of Lewis

Just beyond Stornoway, on either side of the Braighe, Point and Sandwick is a place of dramatic coastlines, beautiful beaches, working crofts, historic villages and big Hebridean skies.

Stretching from Sandwick across the Braighe to the Eye Peninsula, the area is rich in history, Gaelic culture, wildlife and landscapes shaped by generations of island life.

Whether you’re looking for a coastal walk, exploring Lewis by bike, discovering local history and archaeology, or simply finding somewhere beautiful to stop and take in the view, there is plenty to discover.

Explore Point and Sandwick

Follow quiet roads and coastal paths through villages and crofting townships, with the sea rarely far from view.

The Point & Sandwick Trail offers opportunities to explore the area on foot or by bike, taking in coastline, beaches and communities along the way. Further east, the landscape opens out towards Tiumpan Head and the Minch, with views towards the mainland mountains on a clear day.

The coastline itself is full of places worth seeking out, from sandy bays and rocky shores to quieter corners that can feel a world away from Stornoway, despite being only a short drive from the town.

Stories, heritage and island life

The villages of Point and Sandwick have a rich history, visible throughout its landscape.

Ancient sites sit alongside the remains and stories of more recent generations, while the area's crofting and fishing heritage continues to shape its communities today.

The story of the Point Land Raiders is an important part of that history, commemorating the men and women whose struggle for access to land helped shape the communities that followed.

At Garrabost Mill, Point and Sandwick Trust is working with Urras Gharraboist to bring an important piece of the area's heritage back into use, creating another place from which visitors can discover the stories of Point and its people.

See and do

There’s no single way to explore Point and Sandwick.

Walk or cycle part of the Point and Sandwick Trail, discover the area's beaches and coastal scenery, visit local makers and community businesses, explore archaeological and historic sites, or take the time simply to wander through the villages and see a different side of Lewis.

Open Eye Tours, a new initiative from Point and Sandwick Trust, will also offer opportunities to explore the landscape, heritage and stories of the area with local guides.

Part of the community

Point & Sandwick isn't simply somewhere to visit. It is home to active crofting communities, local businesses, makers and community organisations.

Spending time here offers the opportunity to support those communities too – whether that's stopping for something to eat, shopping locally, visiting a maker or choosing local accommodation.

As Visit Point & Sandwick develops, we'll be adding more information about places to visit, walks and trails, local businesses, food and drink, accommodation, heritage and things to do across the area.
