Inspiring the next generation of netball players at Sgoil an Rubha

May 19, 2026

Point and Sandwick Trust is supporting girls sport at Sgoil an Rubha by funding netball coaching and umpiring courses, alongside the purchase of new equipment for the school’s growing after-school netball club.  The Trust awarded funding to cover two courses delivered by Netball Scotland, an Introduction to Netball Coaching course and an Umpiring course, as well as contributing towards the purchase of 10 new netballs.

The funding has already helped expand opportunities for pupils, with teacher Mrs Monrad successfully completing her coaching qualification and establishing a weekly after-school netball club at the school. Parent volunteer Donna MacKinnon, who self-funded her own training, also achieved her coaching award and now supports sessions as pupils prepare for a Netball Festival taking place later this month. Both are currently working towards their umpiring qualifications.

Mrs Monrad and Donna MacKinnon said of the grant, “We are very grateful to Point and Sandwick Trust for generously funding netball equipment and netball coaching and umpire training. This has had a positive impact on the pupils by providing access to qualified coaching, improving skills, confidence and teamwork. The support has made a significant difference to girls sport at Sgoil an Rubha, increasing enthusiasm and participation as well as creating more structured and enjoyable training sessions. A weekly after-school netball club is now in place, and we look forward to attending a netball festival at the end of May.”

Chris Mackenzie, parent at Sgoil an Rubha and Board member of Point and Sandwick Trust, said PST was pleased to support opportunities that encourage young people to get involved in sport, helping them build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy being active together. Since beginning operation of its community-owned wind farm, PST has given £66,674 to Sgoil an Rubha supporting school trips, sport and learning equipment and more.
